My Superpower and Raspberry Loaf

Raspberry bread

I’ve always been, to my slight chagrin, a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. I can sing a bit, write a bit, dance a bit and cook a bit but I don’t think I’ve ever done any of those to the point where someone was so impressed I could have knocked them over with the proverbial. I always thought it was because I lack that thing called stick-to-it-ability, because I guess sheer persistence is what makes a person great, rather than merely good, at something but now I know it’s because those things are incompatible with my superpower. Yes, my superpower.

I know that most of you, unless you have read “All my Friends are Superheroes,” think that a superpower is something like being able to fly, or see through walls. Well, let me tell you, there are quite a few, nay, a whole raft of superpowers that are, in fact, relatively inconvenient.

Raspberries in a bowl

Take for example The Chip. “Chip was born with a chip on her shoulder. It’s an immensely heavy chip, a chip that weighs so much it forced her to develop superhuman strength. But the chip on Chip’s shoulder weighs so much that only her super-strength could remove it, but she can’t use her super-strength until she gets rid of the chip and she can’t get rid of the chip without using her super-strength…” She therefore appears no stronger than a normal person. Falling Girl, to take another example, cannot ever climb higher than two storeys because her superpower is falling. She can fall off a two inch kerb!

My superpower, my dears, is procrastination. I can procrastinate ‘til the cows come home. I can procrastinate until the cows go back out again! My procrastination has the beauty of a symphony by one of the masters. I’m telling you, my powers of procrastination are an awesome sight to behold.

Nevertheless, all procrastination must have an end, or otherwise you just end up not doing a thing, which is not the same at all.

I made this raspberry loaf…well, let’s just say I made this raspberry loaf a not inconsiderable length of time ago and have been meaning to do it again for the same period. You shouldn’t wait that long.

What’s your superpower?

Raspberry Loaf adapted slightly from Joy the Baker

This is moist, and just barely sweet with the sour pop of raspberries to keep things interesting and it’s also about as easy as cake gets. Joy’s recipe calls for slivered almonds to top it and I used them the first time to good effect but I didn’t have any this time and that was fine too. There isn’t any reason I can see why you shouldn’t replace the raspberries with cherries or blueberries, if you try it, let us know how it went.

250 grams (2 cups) plain flour

1/2 teaspoon salt (omit if you’re using salted butter)

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

225 grams (1 cup) sugar

115 grams (1/2 cup) softened butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 eggs

75 grams (2 tablespoons) sour cream

125 grams (1 cup) frozen or otherwise, raspberries

30 grams (1/3 cup) slivered almonds (optional)

Grease a 10 cm x 30 cm loaf tin and preheat the oven to 160 celsius (325 fahrenheit).

Whisk the dry ingredients except the sugar, together.

In a separate bowl, cream the butter, sugar and vanilla.

Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then mix in the flour and sour cream. The batter will be quite stiff.

Fold the berries in gently, pour into the prepared tin (or layer them, as I did, so the juice doesn’t stain the batter) and bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour or until a skewer inserted comes out cleanish (the raspberries make it look moist so don’t over do it or the cake part will dry out).

Hmmmmm – I guess my superpowers are Waking Up Before The Alarm (which is very handy) and Sports Injury Magnet (which is really not so good).

sasa June 23, 2010 at 9:10 am

Ooh, Waking Up Before the Alarm, I have that, but not reliably, so I guess I couldn’t say it’s a superpower. SIM, well, you know I don’t do games so I’ve never had a chance to test it…

Isabelle June 22, 2010 at 10:58 pm

I think my cats would tell you that my superpower is Making Food Appear Twice A Day. They really enjoy that one.
My other superpowers involve Finding Good Food In Strange Cities, and Locating Invisible Objects By Tripping Over Them. The first is very useful, while the latter isn’t useful at all (and really quite embarassing)
Oh, and that’s a very yummy looking loaf you’ve got there. Our raspberry bushes are just about ready, so as long as I can get to the berries before the birds do, I’m totally using them to make this.

sasa June 23, 2010 at 9:11 am

Well, maybe your cats have the superpower Keeping Birds Away From Raspberries?

Marietta June 23, 2010 at 1:36 pm

hahahaha very interesting super powers Isabelle!

tasteofbeirut June 22, 2010 at 11:05 pm

I love your loaf the raspberries shining through are so lovely and poetic.

sasa June 23, 2010 at 6:04 pm

They taste poetic too ;P

stephfret June 22, 2010 at 11:13 pm

I definitely share the Procrastination superpower. And also Falling Asleep During Movies. I think my biggest power though is Making a Huge Mess in the Kitchen and then Leaving it for my Sweetheart to Clean Up ‘Because I Cooked.’ I’m sooo good at that one.

sasa June 23, 2010 at 9:11 am

That *is* a good one. I think I know a few people with that one ;P

sallyismycat June 23, 2010 at 7:24 am

Are you scribblin away on a math problem, or drawing the schematics of the raspberry loaf? Perhaps the loaf itself has superpowers like the ability to implode deliciousness.

sasa June 23, 2010 at 9:15 am

Making Lists – that’s part of my superpower.

Meeta June 23, 2010 at 8:13 am

i am not the real procrastinator – i have on a few things but i always have such an uneasy feeling that it’s much easier for me to do the task and get it over and done with. i do not know if i have any superpowers – i wish i did though and then would beam me a slice of this lovely cake! i made something similar last year! it’s wonderful!

sasa June 23, 2010 at 9:15 am

Your superpower must be Getting Things Done on Time then ^_^

H June 23, 2010 at 1:48 pm

My superpower seems to be Embarrassing Myself Daily in Public. I’m also great at Cooking More Than Required every single time I step into the kitchen, which means there’s ALWAYS leftover. This will most likely come in handy when I make this Raspberry Loaf and feel the need to eat half of it straight away. Yum!

sasa June 23, 2010 at 6:05 pm

I love leftovers! Nothing makes me feel more secure than knowing I have the makings of a snack lurking in my fridge.

AML June 23, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Awesome recipe. Nice addition to a trifle, or zuppa inglese. I likey. Layered with white chocolate mouuse. The addition of sour cream is nice. Killer. For superpowers, I have the insane ability to make everything and everybody feel dark, depressed, sad, melancholy, and generally unsettled. I have the ability to radiate an energy that you couldn’t cut through with a chainsaw. See, it could go in the other direction and make people happy and optimistic. It just never seems to manifest itself that way. I typically end making people want to crawl out of their skin and hide.

sasa June 23, 2010 at 6:07 pm

My other superpower is actually the ability to crawl out of my skin. It’s quite disconcerting the first time you see it I hear.

flo June 23, 2010 at 5:26 pm

They call me Sir Eat-A-Lot, so that could be interpreted as my superpower. I would like to be Sir Clean-A-Lot, but I’ve (surely) got way to go.

sasa June 23, 2010 at 6:07 pm

You’re doing very well on the latter front though, it must be said.

Vanessa June 23, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Hah, well my biggest super power is being messy. You can put me in a range of tidy rooms and within 1 hour, it’ll look like a bomb’s hit it. Although my other super power is being even more punctual than the Germans; I’m so worried about being late that I’m always early and have to hang around. I love raspberries and as I also have some crème fraîche to use, this sounds tempting.

sasa June 23, 2010 at 6:09 pm

An inconvenient superpower in cold climes to be sure…I thought it was just the Swiss that were punctual but obviously not.

Su-Lin June 23, 2010 at 7:06 pm

My superpower is the ability to sleep through both my alarms and wake up not realising that I’d turned them off when they sounded.

What a gorgeous cake! I’ve been wanting to bake a raspberry cake for a while and this has given me that little push! I hope I find some time this weekend.

sasa June 23, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Ruh oh, that sounds like a dangerous one…

SMITH BITES June 24, 2010 at 2:31 am

Well Sasa ~ was going to say that I don’t have any superpowers but maybe I do; because I’m a planner/organizer. I plan for the ‘what-ifs’ in life and tend to plan for the bad so I’ll be pleasantly surprised when the good happens. Planner/organizers are almost always never at peace . . . but The Professor is helping me work on it!

Lovely, lovely cake – and since my raspberries are now in season, will be making this one soon!

I am always delighted to visit your blog – you make me laugh and THAT is a great superpower, my dear – add it to your list!

sasa June 24, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Aw, thank you! I’m a super planner too, it’s good but I also try to let it go a bit…

Jessica June 24, 2010 at 7:19 am

This looks fabulous! Yum!

Carolyn Jung June 24, 2010 at 7:41 am

I think we are all procrastinators at heart. Most of us like to take our time, to mull things over for awhile. But you’re right — there’s no sense in loafing around when THIS loaf awaits us. ;)

sasa June 24, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Is your superpower Finding Food Puns by any chance?

Amy @ cookbookmaniac June 24, 2010 at 1:49 pm

Thank you for your story about the superpowers. It really hit home, in a good way. I guess I was born with a chip on my shoulder that I can shake somedays but on other days it is heavier than a boulder. One day, maybe one day, I’ll have enough heart, soul and might to make it vanish into thin air… one day.

FOODESSA June 24, 2010 at 2:03 pm

This phenomena happens to people who have many talents and have a difficult time picking the most important to pay attention to.
I find I no longer procrastinate when I’m truly passionate about something.
It takes time to figure it all out.
BTW…thanks for your visit…it has given me a chance to discover yours.
Very nice raspberry cake loaf ;0)
Flavourful wishes,
Claudia

Anh June 24, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Ohh! I am one of those who procrastinate when it comes to study. Other than that, I’m okay :D

Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella June 24, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Haha my superpower is tenacity! Not a good thing for others around me mind you! :P Gorgeous looking raspberry loaf! I made a similar one with raspberry and coconut ages ago. I must make it again! :)

Stephanie June 24, 2010 at 8:33 pm

I giggled the whole way through that post. I have the power of procrastination as well!! During university I found so many interesting things do read and do and research that had nothing to do with my to-do list that I actually needed to get done.

That loaf looks soo tasty

Maria June 24, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Beautiful loaf! My superpower is being super effective and organised BUT it usually means I get things done in now time without really thinking them through… Which in turn means I might have to go back and do everything all over again. Fail.

_mae.lu June 24, 2010 at 11:08 pm

Uh, yeah, that’s me.

Procrastination and whining.

XX.
Mae Lu, thereafterish.

The Grubworm June 25, 2010 at 8:27 am

That cake looks like the perfect afternoon tea cake, to have with a glass of jasmine iced tea. Yum.

My superpower would have to be my spectacular ability to throw food anywhere and everywhere when eating. It’s almost uncanny, the places I find bits of my dinner after eating.

sasa June 25, 2010 at 5:45 pm

Oh *that’s* why they call you…never mind.

The Grubworm June 26, 2010 at 2:27 pm

:-D bwahahahaha haha ha… almost made me spit out my cucumber and feta…

Sophie June 26, 2010 at 6:18 pm

A stunning & lovely cake!

MMMMMMMM,…lovely food!

peasepudding June 27, 2010 at 3:51 am

I suppose I’m “Little Miss Can’t Sit and do Nothing” which can be a very wearing super power when it is cold & wet outside, at least now I have the school kitchen to go to if I get stir crazy at home! Made my Lebkucken today for a mid winters picnic but it hasn’t stopped raining so the picnic was canned and P & I are sitting indoors and munching on the goodies with Gluhwein! Will post soon.

Des June 27, 2010 at 2:37 pm

My superpower is that I overanalyze everything.

Justin Orde July 8, 2010 at 7:39 pm

My Superpower is also procrastination but I have found my cryptonite… don’t know what it is but something is keeping me focussed on catering and trying to make a good job of it. Weird. Controlling my Hangrrr is helping so being near food is a bonus…. maybe my Hangrrr is my cryptonite??? Here’s to us jacks and our random paths to fulfilment. ( I’m currently of the belief I’ll retire from Catering by the time and 25 and write for a living, sh’yah rightingtons. :P

Raspberries are coming into full swing right now here in Scotland so gonna have to try this loaf!!!

Justin Orde July 9, 2010 at 12:06 am

25??? I mean 35 – either way it’s wishful thinking.

Sasa July 9, 2010 at 10:30 am

Hangrrr! Hangrrr is our kryptonite! It has all become clear now.
