Unless You Go To Istanbul, You Probably Won’t Ever See A Guy Peel An Artichoke Quite Like This

This is the artichoke-peelingest mo’fo in the west, bar none. Or none that I’ve ever seen. Actually, that’s not strictly true; F. took this video at Götztepe Market – recommended by the intrepid Robyn Eckhardt of Eating Asia whose every suggestion hit the spot –  in Istanbul which is actually on the Eastern side so it might be more accurate to say “in the east.” Either way, prepare to be amazed. By the way, this is raw and uncut in case you couldn’t tell – those bits of peel flying as if they’re on fast forward? Au naturel.

Wow, now that’s a skill!
I have seen something similar at a “laiki” in Greece (laiki are local street markets selling fresh produce) but this guy is super fast!

Good to be back here, I’ve missed you! You always find the most amazing stuff and I can’t get over how fast this guy is. Hope you’re also making progress with your own artichoke peeling ;-)

I did Luisa’s potato and artichokes a few times for practise!

Dang. I was just there and I didn’t see anything like that! That’s incredible. How did you like the city? I’d love to hear more about your adventures. We had such a great time, and thought the food was great. Hope to see a post with more of your trip soon. Btw, how are you adjusting back home?

BRILLIANT! I wonder how many artichokes he had to peel to get that good.

I’ve got a trip next year to Istanbul, I’ll have to keep an eye out for him..

Thanks for bringing a smile to this dreary afternoon x

My word, that must be one sharp knife! Amazing.

Sasa June 8, 2011 at 7:36 pm

He sharpened it terrifyingly fast every two or three chokes!

Wow. As a Turk even I’m impressed :) Nice capture.

That was so fun to watch! I would be happy living in a place where artichoke whittling = performance art.

Anna Johnston June 13, 2011 at 1:15 am

Geez…. nice one. Bet he’s done that a million times before huh :)

Have been to Istanbul a short stay and vowed to go back and explore more of Turkey especially Anatolia and Gaziantep. Love your videos, you did a great job, just the right length too. Perfect.

Oh no! What about the delicious leaves! Did they go to waste?

Sasa January 10, 2012 at 2:37 pm

Probably. Sad, but it was worth it for the spectacle!
