December the 16th is, in my opinion, one of the most auspicious days of the year; without it, my life would be immeasurably poorer. The reason it’s such a happy day is because it’s the birthday of three (three!) of my favourite people. I know it’s not the done thing to choose favourites but let’s face it, we all do, right? And the favouritest of them all, is the one beginning with F. Also, the word “favourite” is beginning to look as if I spelt it wrong so I’ll stop using it now. Also, it would be weird if the month of December went straight from the 15th to the 17th, don’t you think?

*Short trips are awesome. I’ve always been a quit-my-job-and-travel-until-my-money-runs-out kind of person but living on The Continent (an anachronism I know, but it nevertheless (or therefore?) amuses me) has awakened me to the pleasures of three-day jaunts.

*In extremely rural mountain villages in valleys in the Bregenzerwald there are people whose houses were built in the shade (Schattasitta in dialect or Schattenseite in high German) and those whose houses stood in the light of the sun (Sunnasitta or Sonnenseite). Both are prejudiced against the others and ne’er the twain shall meet!

Since Auckland is pretty well evergreen and that’s where I spent my formative years, this real Spring thing knocks me for six every time it happens. Spring in Tokyo was beautiful too – when you came across the odd tree, concrete jungle that it is – but in Vorarlberg, well: it’s another thing altogether. And this from a girl who often declares “it’s hard to impress me with the scenery, I’m from New Zealand after all” (smug and annoying, I know).
