Hangrrr [hæŋ-gə] -noun
1. Anger caused by hunger.
2. Persistent feeling of irritability caused by hunger.
Hangrrr is a little known but common problem, debilitating both for sufferers and the people around them. You might know a hangry person without even being aware of it. This is what a hangry person looks like:
Hangrrr is insidious and can come on swiftly and without warning. If a person in your vicinity becomes hangry:
Do not approach, do not attempt to share any of their food and do not put fingers near mouth until he or she can be fed and talked down to a reasonable state.
Hangrrr can destroy friendships and families needlessly. Always remember, a hangry person is not able to control their reactions and behaviour until sufficiently fed. To this end, snacks such as muesli bars, biscuits and other portable snacks should be carried by those close to hangrrr sufferers at all times.
A hangry person can go from content to ravenously hungry in just a moment. This may seem contrary and disagreeable, but we once again stress: it is likely they do not even know that they are hungry and cannot therefore, be held accountable for their actions. Hangrrr sufferers may deny their condition. Indeed, confronting them in a hangry state can be dangerous. Wait until the person has been fed and calmed.
Common symptoms include irrational or aggressive behaviour, inability to choose from a menu, over-reaction, over-sensitivity and teariness. When in the throes of an attack, they may be exceedingly protective of any food they are eating and reluctant to share.
If you love a person living with hangrrr, be patient and don’t forget to carry a stock of snacks.
