I confess, possums, I wrote this nearly a month ago and haven’t had the wherewithal to take pictures of something I’ve cooked to go with the post, but now I have and here I am. Since this is a review, I thought I might make something from Luisa’s book but instead, I have made something that comforts me – the way the food in her book comforts her. These furikake twists are a riff on cheese twists but use furikake, or rice sprinkles, nori and cheese and by the awesome powers invested in puff pastry turn out to be just as delicious with what for me are the flavours of growing up.

This morning I woke up early-early, before the sun was up. Since it’s Monday, and we ate too much at the beach over the weekend, I was determined to walk to yoga, and start the week off right.

As I walked out the door, feeling a little jittery from lack of breakfast but knowing I’d regret having eaten porridge before a series of twists, a UPS man stopped me on the stairs and handed me a package. I knew it would be an advance copy of Luisa’s “My Berlin Kitchen,” which I’d been looking forward to reading since she announced she was writing a book.

Three years ago, my best friend and I went from London to Paris to meet my mum and stepfather who were renting an apartment there for a few days. There was a cute little kitchen where we prepared simple dishes from things we picked up at the market -just like you’re supposed to in France – and on the table was a little book: Clotilde’s Edible Adventures in Paris. When I saw the picture on the cover, my interest was piqued and after I began reading, I devoured the entire thing – it was so charmingly written and useful, even though I knew I wouldn’t be able to do even a hundredth of what was in there in the short time we had. I then promptly forgot about the holiday, and the book, as I prepared to move house for something like the 28th time.

As I survey the detritus of the sickroom (in my case: screwed up tissues, remnants of cups of tea drunk long ago, orange peels and thermometers – inexplicably not only a digital but a mercury one too) scattered around me with eyes glazed from watching far too many episodes of The Wire – it took me 3 tries to get into it but boy, I now have the zeal of the newly converted and I won’t hesitate to recruit – I feel a mild disgust.
